Custom Designer Peels
The first thing to know about peels is that they are not all like Samantha’s in “Sex and the City”. A peel is a form of skin exfoliation in order to combat skin damage and signs of aging. To understand peels, we need to understand how skin works.
Skin is composed of keratin. New skin cells are formed in the basal layer, the lowest layer of the epidermis. These cells gradually push themselves to the top where they die off and form the stratum corneum, the protective outermost layer of the skin. Here they eventually shed off. It takes approximately one month for the cells to reach the top. As we age, our skin regeneration deteriorates, and the process slows down. Regular exfoliation will help accelerate the skin’s natural desquamation (shedding) process. The removal of the dead skin cells allows for fresh new cells to be revealed and with them a healthy, glowing complexion and approved appearance of the skin.
A peel is a deeper form of exfoliation. Depending on its composition, a peel can dissolve the bonds that hold the skin cells together, or dissolve protein (keratin) itself. The intensity and pH of the peel will determine how ‘deep’ the peel will work. This means not all peels will automatically lead to a visible peeling of the skin.
In fact, so called lunchtime-peels with no or minimal visual peeling, are gaining increasing popularity. Specific active ingredients and enhancers added to a peel will target concerns such as signs of skin aging, pigmentation or acne.
At Skin Deep Medical Aesthetics we address individual client concerns with Image Skincare’s Couture Designer Peels. They work best in a series, with a gradual increase of intensity for best results and comfort. *Individual results may vary.

What to know before a peel
A peel might cause increased sensitivity to the skin depending on the skin type and home care regimen. Side effects may include, but are not limited to stinging, itching-irritation, redness, swelling, tightness, peeling and scabbing of the skin. Discontinue the use of prescription Vitamin A Keratolitic drugs 7 days before and after treatment. Discontinue any exfoliating scrubs, glycolic acid, or benzol peroxide treatments for at least 24 hours before and after the treatments. Sun exposure, tanning beds, sweating, exercising, hot baths or showers, scrubbing, picking or rubbing need be avoided after a peel.
