In addition to sunscreen, hats play an important role in keeping the skin safe from damaging sun rays – not only the face, but also the scalp, neck and chest. Here is a little guide on fashion, function and what to know when buying a hat:
Did you know that grass and soil reflect about 10% of UV radiation, sand reflects 15% and water about 25%? Only a hat with 360-degree coverage and at least a 4” rim provides sun protection for the face, neck and upper chest.
Whether you go with a hiker hat or a fashionable floppy one, consider under-chin-ties to protect it from wind gusts. Look for materials with 50+ UPF (like “SPF,” but for clothes). A 50+ UPF rating means at least 97.5% of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays are blocked.
Tight fabric weaves will seal out rays most effectively. Darker colors absorb the rays (keeping them from skin). Bright colors both absorb and deflect better than pale, neutral tones. Remember: as fabric ages, colors fade and the weave weakens thus offering less protection – and a reason to swap for a new hat!
Boaters and beach lovers should know that a wet hat can transport UVA and UVB rays through the hat to the skin. Golfers should prefer a wide-brimmed golf hat over a visor to protect the scalp. Remember, a billed hat like a baseball hat does not protect the sides of the face, ears and neck.
Once sun sports have manifested themselves on the skin, they are difficult to treat. While laser treatments, peels, and lightening products offer some relief, choose to enjoy this summer prepared and stay skin safe! Our aesthetician Julie will be happy to consult with you.
